October 10, 2008 – Industrial Power Systems, Inc. (IPS) of Jacksonville, Florida, is pleased to announce it has completed delivery and commissioning of the main power distribution switchboard and generator paralleling and control switchgear for the $1 billion Phase III expansion project at Atlantis Paradise Island, the Bahamas.
The IPS-designed and built switchboard distributes and controls utility and backup generator power to five new Paradise Island substations. The generator switchgear operates and automatically controls seven 2,000 KW, 7200 volt Mitsubishi engine-driven emergency generator sets working in concert with the main power switchboard and utility power to provide continuous power to the Phase III site. The switchgear is also designed and built to accommodate the addition of one future 2,000 KW generator set. The generators and switchgear provide automatic electric power whenever the utility fails or when they are needed independent of utility power, such as during tropical storms.
The Phase III expansion of Atlantis Paradise Island included adding a new 600-room all-suite hotel tower (The Reef Atlantis), a major conference center, a $200 million five-star caliber condominium hotel tower (The Cove at Atlantis), and Aquaventure which stretches over 141 acres of rivers, rapids, water escalators, waves, water slides and a man-made lagoon for dolphin encounters called Dolphin Cay.
The distribution and emergency control systems custom-designed by IPS are at the heart of ensuring this astonishing and complex destination resort operates without interruption to its electric power.
“It is an honor for our company to have been selected again to be involved in the ongoing evolution of Atlantis Paradise Island,” said Bill Young, President and Chief Technology Officer of IPS. “It is an affirmation of the customer’s confidence in our expertise and in the quality of our product and our craftsmanship,” he added.
IPS has been designing and building electrical power control systems for the industrial and marine industries for over 25 years and has a proven track record with national and international installations in critical and sensitive applications. In addition to Atlantis Paradise Island, among these installations are electric utilities, telephone companies, major hospitals, international airports, data centers, the US Navy and Coast Guard, and water/wastewater treatment plants.
